Thyroid nodules


Abstract
One hundred and fifty six patients with thyroid nodules, admitted and operated at the depa-rtment of surgery, S.N.U.H., from Oct. 1972 to Oct. 1976, were analyzed with the special emp-hasis on the incidence of carcinoma.
Sex distribution of thyroid nodules revealed preponderance of female with the ratio of 1 : 7.2. The peak incidence of thyroid nodules was noted in the 4th decade (37.2%) and most of them (71. 8%) were between 3rd and 5th decades.
The histology classification of thyroid nodules were as follows;
thyroid adenoma 83 cases(53.2¡Æ%0)
thyroid cancer 56 cases(35.9%)
nodular goiter 15 cases (9.7%)
thyroiditis 1 cases (0.6%)
thyroid cyst 1 case (0.6%)
The incidence of carcinoma in thyroid nodules were 57.9% in male and 32.8% in female, and the peak incidence was noted in the age of 60 or more (78.6%). Among the 156 thyroid nodules cervical lymph nodes were palpated in 20 cases (12.8%) and 19 of them had thyroid.
Radioactive iodine scintiscans were performed in 87 cases and revealed cold nodules in 75 cases, of which 30 cases (40%) had thyroid cancer.
Operative techniques were various from biopsy to total thyroidectomy according to the diseases, and radical neck dissections were performed if lymph node metastasis, noted.
Postoperative complications were transient hoarseness in 4 cases, wound infection in 3 cases, respiratory complications in 3 cases, tetany in 1 case and wound bleeding. in 1 case and no fatal cases have occurred.
